This project treats itself about a work of extension and reform of the existing building of Olympic Rowing Orio´s Club, located in the province of Gipuzkoa between the municipal areas of Aia and Orio both lying on the river Oria. The trapezoidal plot, presents a principal front of access from a high level (+12,00 meters) on the front façade, forming a natural closure rocky plot boundary. From the south high zone, and by means of an access ramp, the base platform height is reached at 4,50 meters.
The plot surface is almost horizontal, and its northern limited by the Oria river. In the eastern part the plot is finished off by the mentioned ramp of access to the platform, and adjoins the Santio Erreka Auzoa´s industrial building number 42. On the western edge the plot is closed, according to the orography of the hillside that reaches the river bank.
A new building is designed, on the basis of the current building.
In plan the building is extended to reach the rocky slope. In height the current plants are increased with the provision of two new plants and a new covering.
Expansion Proposal
The maximum urban development use is achieved by extending the building towards the hillside, leaving the front platform intact to be used as cleaning and preparation of the boats area. The reinforced concrete portal frame of the existing building is kept and is integrated with the new metal frame structure that holds the cover.
The proposed building from its functional scheme and its connections with the existing building, to the modular distribution and the situation of the service areas, is conceived from a strictly functional point of view.
The building has been designed with this dual approach of use, the properly internal one, of the sports building in it, and a conditioning coherently added to allow possible flexibility of areas and internal spaces.
Paddles up. The structural concept
The structure tries to join in a coherent way the structural and formal extension of the building, with the aim of creating an emblematic element for Orio.
The new steel columns hold the light plane corresponding to the cover. Thanks to these supports the cover can be a thin sheet giving a light character to the cover. The ceiling lights created from different glass folds on the cover sheet, add natural lighting to the building.
The great height of the pillars lit on its summit, confer a characteristic image from different viewpoints of Orio´s Tow, mountains and roads around. In turn, the building itself intend to evoke the traditional gesture of rowers on arrival to port after a deserved victory in the race.
Core communication
The building is divided into different plants with regard to the use that is concentrated in each of them. The communications hub is located in the center of the building in its current location.
To guarantee the accessibility of the building an elevator is constructed and the form of the staircase is modified. The proposal raises two main entrances, one from the river bank (elevation +4.5 m) and the other one from the south facade where road traffic is concentrated (elevation+ 12.5 m). This tries to differentiate the public use of the building (shop, club, museum, etc..) from the most private use (Sportive Technifying Centre, gymnasium,access to hangars, etc..).
Top floor - p2 - (cafeteria, club, museum, shop, administration).
This is the main entrance area of the building, and forms the downward vertical paths, feature of the proposal. It has a primary use as a private club as a society. Also on the plant there is distributed a small administrative area and the shop. The vocation of the plant is totally extrovert in all aspects; as permeable element that joins visual North - South, as expressive element of the formal identity of the cover of the building, and as evocatively and agglutinative element of experiences and human relations (foyer space, club space, exhibition space).
The opened arrangement allows a clean coronation of the building through the glazed skin with the light cover. The peculiarity of the cover together with the transparent façade cladding gives to these rooms privileged views over the river that are accentuated by the diaphanous solution proposed. The access from south facade has a public nature in order not to interrupt the use of the Sportive Technifying Centre. With the same aim the cafeteria - club has been endowed with a differentiated access, guaranteeing this way the use of this part of the building in an independent way.
The space composed by the museum and the club, formalize a surface, or diaphanous stay, adaptable according to the needs of the future I use. Hereby this will create a physical and visual adaptable relation by means of mobile elements creating a global space of approximately 500 square meters.
First Floor - p1 –(Sportive Technifying Centre, gymnasium, changing rooms).
This is the main floor, where the principal services of the building develop. The layout minimizes the tours through a linear organization of services. The location of the pieces answers to criteria of practicality as well as to the optimization of the incredible views that feeds the building, visual above the Oria river, and the town of Orio. The communications hub is centrally available in order to minimize the tours in and towards each plant. The cover of the current building will form the lower frame of this plant, where the “dry training” will be centered.
The main spaceis the gymnasium. Composed of a surface of more than 900 m ² and 5,5m of height. Likewiseventilationand natural lighting provides this space with ideal characteristics for indoorsports practice. The gym has a direct access tothe pit andthe sportive Technifying Centre. Locatethe pitnear the gymisimportant to be able to use the latter as complement before the use of the gymnasium, complementing the muscle work before and after thetrainingin the pit.
The pit is built in the back limit of the current building to create and optimize a new structure suitable for the overload of this element. The coaches room and the Technifying Center overlook the gymnasium and the estuary. Thuscoaches cancontrol the trainingin the gym andthe water fromthe same space.
Mezzanine Spe-(visitor area).
Placed on the current mezzanine floor of the building, it occupies a limited surface of the general plant of the building. Its main use is that of the service for the visitors. It is closely related to the hangars floor, with communications along the plant by means of one section stairs. The functional structure of the plant prioritizes the linear tours and the use of the open corridor provides a combined image of the ground floor and mezzanine that configure the container of the current Rowing Club building.
This way a simple reading of the volumetric and structural composition of the building origin of this Project is provided. The mezzanine floor of the current building is remodeled to shelter the visitor’s areas. The direct access from the hangar gives this space a direct relationship with the use of thereof. The mezzanine space "takes advantage" of the current structural floor, currently occupied with the gym area and offices.
Ground floor-p0-(hangars, rental, box)
The entire ground floor is used for storage of boats. It´s been designed the best possible distribution with the current structure. Hereby, the hangar in the eastern part will shelter the trawlers (fixed seat boat) and placed on the west part of the communications hub, those of mobile bank, , canoes, and the rental area. These two spaces are communicated from the communications hub back ensuring the connection between both of them. The east end provides the space for the Box, creating a space where a trawler enters and 5 oars.
The oars will be placed in the inside part of the façade where the headroom is 5m. On this floor there is a direct access to the horizontal platform of "riverbank ", allowing direct use from boats to the river. The ground floor occupies the entire floor area of the building, optimizing the storage space of boats. The vertical clearance of the plant comes defined by the configuration of the existing "Olympic Rowing Club of Orio" existing, defining two spaces of free heights of 2,80 meters and 5,50 meters each.
